Thankfully, Istria gets it.
As one of the most dog-friendly regions in the Mediterranean, the Istrian peninsula has moved well beyond the idea that dogs are simply “allowed” on the beach. Here, you do not have to choose between your own comfort and your dog’s happiness. From well-kept campsites with dog showers and fenced play areas to shady pine forests, spacious pebble beaches and easy access to the sea, Istria has dog-friendly beaches where both of you can properly relax.

Northern Istria: Umag & Novigrad
Northern Istria makes beach days with a dog feel surprisingly easy. Along the coast from Savudrija and Umag down to Novigrad, you will find calm coves, pine-shaded paths and plenty of places where dogs feel like part of the scene, not an inconvenience.
Around Kator, the dog-friendly swimming areas are simple, practical and easy to reach, which makes them a good option for everyday dips rather than a full expedition. If you want something a little wilder and roomier, head to Kanegra. Its pebble coves are tucked into greenery, with enough natural shade for your dog to cool off, stretch out and avoid spending the day on scorching rocks.
Further south, Novigrad has some of the best dog-friendly spots in the area. Karpinjan Bay is a tried-and-tested favourite, with a wide pine forest that reaches almost to the water and a gentle pebble shoreline that works well even for dogs who are still figuring out the whole swimming thing.
Then there is Dog Dreams Beach & Bar, the local favourite. This is not a random corner of the coast where dogs are grudgingly allowed. It is a beach built around them.
While you enjoy a coffee or a cold drink, your dog can get in on the fun with specially made dog ice cream or non-alcoholic dog beer. With its laid-back atmosphere and plenty of chances to meet other pups, it is just the kind of place where an easy beach afternoon can turn into the best part of the day.
Poreč & the Surrounding Area
Poreč and its surroundings strike a great balance between easy-to-reach town beaches and beautifully equipped seaside spots made with dogs in mind.
If you are staying in town, the beaches at Peškera and in the Špadići area are easy go-tos for a daily dip. You can reach both on foot, there is decent shade under the pines and the sea access is gentle enough that you will not need to make a whole trip out of your dog’s morning swim.
If you are still planning your trip and looking for the perfect base for you and your four-legged friend, Lanterna is hard to beat. This is where you will find Valamar Camping Lanterna, a campsite that takes dog-friendly holidays to a whole new level.
Here, pets are not simply given a forgotten corner of the beach. Inside the campsite, there is a fantastic Wowsome dog park where your dog can run freely in a safe, fenced area, play off-lead and make a few new furry friends.
Add in dog-friendly sea access, adapted showers and plenty of shade, and Valamar Camping Lanterna becomes much more than a convenient place for a swim. It’s one of the strongest bases on Istria’s west coast for a properly relaxed holiday with your dog.
Rovinj
In Rovinj, one of the biggest summer challenges for dogs – the intense sun – is much easier to manage.
The top choice for dog owners is Zlatni Rt forest park, also known as Punta Corrente. This huge green oasis stretches all the way down to the sea, with kilometres of walking trails tucked into deep shade. Along the coast, you will find little rocky coves and pebble pockets where your dog can swim while you relax under old pine trees, away from the worst of the heat.
If your dog needs easier sea access and is not keen on jumping from rocks, head south of the centre to Cuvi Bay or Borik Beach. Both have gentler pebble entrances into the water, which are much better for less confident swimmers.
A long, well-kept seaside promenade runs along the coast as well, so it is easy to combine a swim with a long afternoon walk by the sea.
Pula & Southern Istria
Southern Istria is a great base for a pet-friendly holiday, especially if you like having options. Around Pula, you can choose between easy pebble beaches, long seaside walks, lively dog-friendly spots and wilder, rockier corners with that classic Istrian feel.
Just north of the city, the dog beaches in Fažana and Valbandon are an easy choice for a relaxed day out. Both have tidy pebble shores and gentle entrances into the sea, so they work well even if your dog is not the most confident swimmer. There is also a long coastal promenade nearby, which means you can turn a quick swim into a proper morning or evening walk.
Another highlight in this area is Hidrobaza in Štinjan, home to “Wau” Beach Bar, a beach bar made with dogs in mind. If you liked the idea of Dog Dreams in Novigrad, this is the southern Istrian version to add to your list. After racing around in the shallows, your dog can take a break with specially made cold treats and healthy snacks, turning a simple beach day into a proper little outing.
If you are staying in Pula itself and want that classic Adriatic feel, head to the Verudela peninsula. Verudela Dog Beach has all the charm of the Istrian coast, with a mix of rocks, small pebbles and beautiful open views of the sea. Because of the rocky shoreline and deeper water, the sea here is incredibly clear, making it a great choice for more active dogs who love jumping in and exploring the water.
For somewhere scenic but a little calmer, try Portić Dog Beach near Peroj. Its wide, rounded pebble bay and calm water make it one of those places where you can throw a ball for ages without too much stress or too many crowds.
Istria’s East Coast: Rabac
When it comes to swimming with your dog, Rabac and the surrounding area have one very practical advantage: perfectly clean white pebbles.
Unlike earthy or sandy beaches, this means your dog is much less likely to come back to your accommodation, or your car) covered in mud and sand.
The official dog beach in Rabac is set at the end of a beautiful coastal promenade, slightly away from the main summer crowds, close to Girandella Resort. This part of the Kvarner Bay is known for its incredibly clear, crystal-like sea, while the entrance into the water is gentle and safe, with small, rounded pebbles underfoot. Even dogs who usually avoid sharp rocks should have no trouble getting into the sea here.
If you are up for a short drive and want quieter coves with fewer people, the real magic lies a little further south. Head towards Sveta Marina and Ravni, two places loved by those looking for peace, nature and beautiful, slightly wilder pebble beaches where your dog has more room to explore.
